Smoke Control Area status

York has address-dependent Smoke Control Area coverage. Do not infer the legal status from the city name or postcode-area prefix.

Some York addresses are already controlled. City of York Council says its entire administrative area will become a Smoke Control Area on 1 November 2026; until then, use the council's address checker for the current boundary.

Inside a Smoke Control Area, use an authorised fuel or an appliance exempt for that UK nation with a fuel specifically permitted by its exemption. Use clean, untreated wood at 20% moisture or less. Ready to Burn is an English retail-sale certification, not the SCA legality test.
